China:Poll finds most respondents say current retirement age is appropriate

| 19 Aug 2024

Almost 60% (57.44%) of respondents in a recent poll believe that the current retirement age in China is appropriate, according to Real Research, an online survey app.

China's current minimum retirement age to receive social pension benefits is 60 for men and 55 for women in white-collar jobs and 50 for women in blue-collar jobs.

The survey, which focused on views on the retirement age, covered 5,000 people globally, including from China. The online poll was carried out in the first 10 days of August 2024. Respondents were aged between 21 and 99.

In July, the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party adopted a resolution stating that China would raise its statutory retirement age gradually “in line with the principle of voluntary participation with appropriate flexibility”. No targeted retirement age was specified.

The global online poll results also show that nearly 59% of respondents support the decision of China raising retirement age. 64.08% say that the move will increase China’s old-age dependency ratio.
