Nepalese people affected by the devastating floods and consequential landslides that followed incessant rains in the country on 26 September 2024 have filed insurance claims worth NPR12.87bn for damages caused by the natural catastrophic events.
According to a news report published in the Republica newspaper a total of 3,686 claims have been filed and a total of 1,809 claims have been settled with payments amounting to NPR1.79bn. Claimants have filed 1,774 claims under property insurance, amounting to NPR9.22bn according to the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA).
According to data provided by NIA there are 324 claims filed under engineering and contractor insurance, amounting to NPR2.84bn. Claimants have also filed 954 claims under motor insurance, seeking a total claim amount of NPR415.34m.
Claimants have also made 393 claims under motor insurance, seeking a total claim amount of
NPR289.9m. In marine insurance, claimants have filed 23 claims, requesting a total of INR44.97m.
There are also 60 claims under livestock insurance, seeking a total of NPR38.3m. For crop insurance, 137 claims have been filed, requesting NPR10.59m. In miscellaneous insurance, 21 claims have been filed, with a total claim amount of NPR7.6m.
According to Republica the NIA said that claimants have sought 267 claims in Koshi province, with payments made for 158 of them. In Madhesh province, there were 108 claims, but only 37 have been settled. In the flood- and rain-affected Bagmati province, claimants have made 3,213 claims, with payments settled for 1,585 of them.
According to the NIA, 47 claims in Gandaki province were made, with payments made for only 15. In Karnali province, claimants have filed eight claims, with payments made for four. Similarly, in Sudurpaschim province, claimants have filed six claims, with payments made for three.
