India's elderly population - or those aged at least 60 - is expected to double to 346m by 2050, according to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) India resident representative Andrea Wojnar.
In an interview with Press Trust of India, Ms Wojnar stressed that more investment in healthcare, housing, and pensions is needed, especially for older women who are "more likely to live alone and face poverty".
She also outlined key population trends that India is prioritising to accelerate sustainable development. These trends include the youthful population, the ageing population, urbanisation, migration, and climate resilience, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities for the nation.
India has a substantial youthful population, with 252m people aged between 10 and 19 years, the UNFPA India head said.
