Thailand:New holding co will focus on investments in insurance ventures for a start

| 26 Aug 2024

BKI Holdings (BKIH), the holding company of Bangkok Insurance, will focus on investments related to insurance business in the first two years of group restructuring because the company has the most knowledge and expertise in the insurance sphere, Dr Apisit Anantanatarat, director and CEO of BKIH, has said.

Where BKIH could find talent who are experts in other areas, the business may be expanded to spread the risk to other business sectors, he said, according to a report by the news website Prachachat.

BKIH was formed in a group restructuring exercise that was completed in June 2024. BKIH operates as an investment holding company, with Bangkok Insurancethe third-largest non-life insurer in Thailandturned into its subsidiary. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) delisted BKI on 18 June while BKIH was listed on the same day as part of the restructuring exercise.

In the first phase of its investment plan, InsurTech would be among the targeted investment field. BKIH is currently negotiating to acquire a stake in an online medical consultation platform (telemedicine platform), a deal which is expected to be completed within this year.

Dr Apisit said, “The decision to invest in the telemedicine platform is because we see it as part of a business trend that will continue to grow in the future in terms of healthcare platforms, and it can be used to service the core business of Bangkok Insurance, which allows for relatively efficient cost management.”

In addition, the group is considering investing in a stake in a third-party administration company, an acquisition which is expected to be completed in 2025.
