HSBC Life and Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong reveal latest advances in histotripsy treatment

| 11 Mar 2025

HSBC Life and Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong jointly announced the latest market developments of the Histotripsy system since its introduction to Hong Kong last year.

HSBC Life has upgraded its Voluntary Health Insurance Flexi Plan to provide 100% coverage over eligible expenses of Histotripsy treatment, while Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong earlier announced that it is the first private hospital to introduce Histotripsy treatment in Asia, catering to the wider public later this March.

Hong Kong has become the first city in Asia to offer Histotripsy treatment—a groundbreaking technology that enables doctors to target and destroy tumours without the need for incisions, radiation, or needles.

Compared to conventional treatment methods, Histotripsy typically results in less pain, fewer side effects and complications, and significantly shorter hospital stays, leading to faster recovery and an improved patient experience. This medical advancement strengthens Hong Kong’s position as a leading destination for innovative healthcare and reinforces its status as a hub for medical innovation in the region.

“We are proud to be the first insurer in Hong Kong to offer full cover for Histotripsy treatment at the certified medical insurance plans under the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme, and we are excited that this treatment will be available to the Hong Kong private sector very soon,” HSBC Life Hong Kong and Macau CEO Daisy Tsang said in a press release statement.

“We are excited to be the first private hospital in Asia to provide the Histotripsy treatment for liver cancer patients. This groundbreaking, non-invasive treatment offers an additional option for patients, particularly those who may not be suitable for surgery, along with more personalised and effective care,” Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong CEO and IHH Healthcare North Asia regional CEO Dr Kenneth Tsang said.
