Taiwan estimates US$2.49m in crop insurance claims following Typhoon Champi

Typhoon Champi has resulted in estimated agricultural insurance payouts of NT$81m ($2.49m), with five weather-index insurance policies meeting the criteria for claims. Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture has urged insurers to simplify claims procedures, proactively calculate and notify affected farmers of payouts, and expedite payments to help them recover from losses caused by the typhoon.

The ministry designated 11 counties and cities as eligible for cash relief and low-interest loans on 26 and 27 October 2026, following assessments of damage to agriculture, forestry, fisheries and livestock. The areas are New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Pingtung County, Yilan County, Hualien County and Taitung County. The ministry said it would continue monitoring damage reports and coordinating with local governments to ensure affected farmers and fishermen receive assistance under disaster relief regulations.

The government is also providing interest-free natural disaster loans and agricultural enterprise disaster loans until 25 August 2027 to support recovery. Agricultural and fishery operators needing funds have been encouraged to apply through loan agencies, while borrowers facing repayment difficulties may seek case-by-case extensions. The measures aim to help affected businesses restore operations and manage financial pressures following the typhoon.
