The 19th Asia Insurance CFO Summit 2026 has kicked off, with the theme 'From Stewardship to Strategy: The CFO as Architect of Resilient Growth'.
In his opening remarks, Asian Capital Advisors Managing Director John Spence, who also chaired the event, called the CFO “an architect of resilient growth”.
According to Mr Spence, the theme of the conference also aptly captures the pivotal role that CFOs play as financial stewards in the current era of accelerating challenges and opportunities.
A CFO’s expanded responsibility
“As CFOs, we face a dynamic environment shaped by the confluences of external headwinds and strategic inflections,” said Mr Spence.
“There are emerging risks such as climate change and cyber exposure. Demographic shifts are also redefining how we plan, underwrite, allocate capital and report value to shareholders.”
Additionally, CFOs have to juggle these with the “ever-increasing demand for transparency, sustainability, performance and agility”, he continued, noting that it has become clear that responsibilities have grown far beyond traditional financial management.
How can CFOs fulfil their responsibilities?
Even as he pointed out the duties CFOs have in pursuing the fulfilment of these responsibilities, Mr Spence also took the opportunity to pose a series questions to attendees in the conference, starting with: “How do we balance short term performance with long term resilience?”
He continued, “Secondly, what strategies will allow us to strengthen our balance sheet while elevating our risk adjusted returns? And thirdly, and perhaps most critically, how can we leverage technology and data to transform financial stewardship into a driver of enterprise-wide strategy and purpose?”
As such, Mr Spence also noted that CFOs have to focus on future proofing operations, building resilient finance teams and embracing change as they strive to lead amid global recalibration and rapid digital transformation.
“We have the opportunity to reimagine the role of insurance CFOs in shaping resilient growth, not just for our organisations, but for the communities and economies we serve across Asia,” he said.
The 19th Asia Insurance CFO Summit 2026, organised by Asia Insurance Review, is running from 19 to 20 May 2026 in Singapore.
