Sri Lanka:State funded student insurance scheme gets insurers backing

| 20 Oct 2026

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd (SLICGL) will partner with the ministry of education to roll out the state-backed Suraksha Student Insurance Scheme, which will offer a financial safety net against unforeseen events and covers incidents occurring both on and off school premises.

The insurance scheme provides free insurance coverage to over four million schoolchildren nationwide, protecting students aged 5 to 21 in Grades 1 through 13 across government schools, government approved private schools and Pirivenas, as well as students aged 4 to 21 in assisted special schools.

Benefits under the scheme include hospitalisation, outpatient care, critical illness coverage and personal accident benefits for permanent or temporary disabilities. The scheme also includes a life insurance benefit for students from low-income families in the event of a parent’s death.
