Natural catastrophes are major loss occurrences which usually cause immense economic or human losses. The Indian Ocean tsunami on 26 December 2004, Typhoon Xangsane which affected the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand in September 2006, and the Jakarta floods in February 2007 are examples of natural catastrophes that have affected Southeast Asia in recent times. In this article, Munich Re Singapore elaborates how a systematically implemented emergency response plan can support insurers and reinsurers’ efforts to direct the limited resources available to where they are most urgently required.
