Australia:Regulators release statistics

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) and the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) have released the bi-annual intermediated general insurance statistics and quarterly cyclone pool respectively.

APRA

APRA’s bi-annual intermediated general insurance statistics is for June 2025, and provides an overview of intermediated general insurance placed with APRA-authorised general insurers, Lloyd’s underwriters and unauthorised foreign insurers.

The intermediated general insurance statistics contain industry level data relating to business placed by intermediaries. Statistics are also provided on business placed with unauthorised foreign insurers, segmented by region, exemption type, atypical risk class and customised reason. 

ARPC

ARPC’s quarterly cyclone pool statistics is for the June 2025 quarter. The report draws on data generated by the cyclone pool, which operates Australia wide, but targets support to cyclone-prone areas. 

Findings from the latest report show that the pool: 

  • Received 111,860 claims, with a total net incurred value (in nominal terms) of A$1.12bn ($740m). The majority of claims reported to the cyclone pool were attributed to tropical cyclone Alfred. 
  • Covers more than 3.2m buildings against financial loss from cyclones. 
  • Has an annual in-force cyclone pool premiums of approximately A$563m for home properties, A$56m for strata and A$25m for small to medium enterprise properties.  
  • Also provides annual discounts for home properties for property level mitigation activities of A$8.2m.
