Asia's energy crisis:Thai cabinet approves emergency borrowing decree

| 07 May 2026

Thailand's cabinet has approved an emergency decree aimed at alleviating cost of living pressures and supporting energy costs.

An article by news platform Reuters also stated that the decree allows the nation to borrow THB400bn ($12.23bn) in this endeavour, according to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The news platform also quoted Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas as calling the ?borrowing necessary, as higher ?energy prices will impact everyone.

According to Reuters, half of the borrowed funds “will be targeted towards vulnerable groups and the other half will be used to help the energy transition”.

“We have to help vulnerable groups,” Mr Ekniti said, according to Reuters. He also noted in the article that the Thai government will try to reduce living costs and push for clean energy use.

All the borrowing will be sourced from within Thailand, Mr Ekniti said, quoted by Reuters. The article added that the decree will be put to parliament next week.
