Nepal:Heavy floods cause US$123m of economic losses

Floods and landslides triggered by recent heavy rainfall last week have caused losses of at least NPR16.5bn ($123m) across Nepal, according to Mr Eaknarayan Aryal, chief secretary of the Government of Nepal.

Speaking at a media conference on 1 October, he said that the damage to physical infrastructure included NPR3.55bn to water supply systems, NPR2.52bn to roads and bridges, and NPR4bn to energy infrastructure. Additionally, preliminary assessments indicate NPR6bn of agricultural losses, reported MyRepbulica.

According to preliminary information collected by the Ministry for Agriculture and Livestock Development, the heavy rainfall on 26-29 September induced damage primarily in crops, livestock, and fishery.

The resultant floods severely affected 21 districts resulting in more than 220 fatalities and injured scores of people.
