Korea's Hwasun County to launch 2025 life safety insurance to support disaster victims

11 Feb 2025

Hwasun County (Governor Gu Bok-gyu) has announced the renewal and implementation of the '2025 County Citizens' Life Safety Insurance,' aimed at assisting residents who have been affected by disasters and safety accidents.

There is no separate enrolment process for the Military and Citizens' Life Safety Insurance for residents of Hwasun County, including registered foreigners. Benefits are available if an insured event occurs during the coverage period.

The insurance covers accidents both within the country and abroad, and policyholders can also receive overlapping benefits from other insurance plans.

Coverage includes death due to natural or social disasters, drowning accidents, death or disability resulting from public transportation use, death or disability from agricultural machinery accidents, death benefits for acute infectious diseases, and traffic accident treatment costs in school and silver zones, among 26 types of coverage.

Notably, this year, the insurance scope has been expanded with the addition of six new coverage types, such as sexual assault crime consolation, bicycle accident diagnosis for injuries lasting four weeks or more. Additionally, in dog bite accidents, coverage has been extended to include general treatment costs, beyond just emergency care.

“Last year, we paid out approximately KRW111m ($76,554) in insurance money for 35 safety accidents. We will further strengthen publicity this year to prevent cases where citizens suffer unexpected accidents but do not receive compensation because they are unaware of the system,” said a representative, reported a Korean news site.
