Singapore:Elderly population jumps by 60% in a decade

| 17 Oct 2025

The number of Singaporeans aged 80 and older has risen by about 60% in the past decade according to data released by the government of Singapore.

The 32-page publication Population in Brief 2025 released by the National Population and Talent Division in October 2025 has revealed that about 145,000 citizens are aged 80 or above, up from 91,000 in 2015. They now comprise 4% of all Singaporeans, up from 2.7% in 2015.

In addition, 20.7% of Singaporeans were aged 65 and above, compared to 13.1% in 2015 and around 24% are projected to be in this age group by 2030.

Overall, Singapore’s total population stood at 6.11m as at June 2025, an increase of 1.2% from June 2024. The proportion of working-age people – defined as those between 20 and 64 – fell from 64.5% in 2015 to 59.8% in 2025.

The Population in Brief is an annual publication that provides an update on Singapore’s key population trends, showing how the city state’s population strategies support a thriving people, dynamic economy, inclusive society and resilient nation.

The findings also reveal that as at June 2025, there were 3.66m Singapore citizens and 0.54m permanent residents. In total, there were 4.20m residents. non-residents, which include foreign workforce across all pass types, dependants and international students, totalled 1.91m.

The data reveals that the increase in Singapore’s total population was mainly due to the growth in the non-resident population. The annualised population growth rate of 1.5% over the past five years (2020-2025) was higher than the 0.5% over the preceding five-year period (2015-2020), mostly due to an increase in the number of work permit holders in the construction sector to support key infrastructure projects such as Changi Terminal 5 and the ramping up of housing supply.
