Japan phases out traditional health insurance cards

| 29 Jul 2025

With the ongoing transition to the "My Number Health Insurance Card"-which integrates My Number cards with health insurance functions-traditional insurance cards, such as those used for National Health Insurance, will expire by the end of this year and will no longer be valid, reported NHK Japan.

In [the prefecture], insurance cards for both the National Health Insurance and the Medical Care System for the elderly will become invalid at the end of this month.

In response, local governments, including Matsuyama City, are urging residents to check mailed documents carefully.

Matsuyama City is currently sending out notices to individuals enrolled in National Health Insurance. Those who have not yet switched to the My Number Health Insurance Card will receive a letter to serve in place of the traditional card.
