Nepal insurance claims hit US$167.3m after Genji agitation

Insurance claims exceeding NPR22.25bn ($167.3m) have been filed for damages caused by arson and vandalism during the recent Genji agitation.

Data from the Nepal Insurance Authority (NEA) shows that 14 non-life insurers and four micro non-life insurers have received a total of 2,478 claims related to the incidents on September 7 and 24, amounting to over NPR22.25bn in reported losses.

Oriental Insurance has filed the largest claim, with NPR5.22bn to be paid across 73 cases.

Siddhartha Premiere follows with the second-highest amount, reporting NPR5.08bn for 279 claims.

IGI Prudential ranks third, with NPR2.76bn due for 170 claims.

Regionally, property insurance accounts for the largest share of claims, with insurers required to pay NPR18.61bn for 538 cases, representing 83.6% of the total claims.

Motor insurance follows, with NPR2.95bn to be paid across 1,778 claims. Engineering and contractor insurance accounts for NPR333.6m over 132 claims, transport insurance totals NPR15.5m for 11 claims, and other categories amount to NPR343.8m for 19 claims.
