Medical inflation puts pressure on Thailand's insurance sector

| 23 Jun 2026

Thailand is facing a rapidly escalating medical inflation crisis, raising concerns among insurers and regulators about its long-term implications for the healthcare and insurance sectors.

Medical inflation has exceeded 10%, more than 15 times the country's overall inflation rate, placing increasing pressure on healthcare financing and insurance costs.

The sharp rise in medical expenses is expected to have a significant impact on household budgets and long-term health planning. Industry observers warn that the trend could lead to higher healthcare spending requirements for both the public and civil servants, potentially affecting the allocation of annual medical budgets in the years ahead. The situation has emerged as a key challenge for the insurance industry and the Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) as they seek to ensure the sustainability and affordability of health coverage.

The effects of rising medical inflation are expected to extend beyond insurers and healthcare providers, with policyholders likely to face higher insurance premiums in the coming years. As healthcare costs increase and more patients file insurance claims, insurers' loss ratios are expected to rise, putting pressure on companies to adjust premiums to maintain profitability and manage risk exposure.

In response to these challenges, the Thai Life Assurance Association has been working to strengthen cooperation between public and private sector stakeholders to address medical inflation and support the development of a more sustainable healthcare system. Efforts are aimed at mitigating the broader impact of rising healthcare costs on the insurance sector and consumers.

Measures to curb excessive healthcare spending have already been introduced. The OIC has implemented co-payment guidelines targeting policyholders with unusually high claim levels, requiring them to bear a portion of medical expenses above specified thresholds.

The initiative is intended to discourage unnecessary utilisation of medical services while helping to contain claims costs and improve the long-term sustainability of health insurance coverage.
